Melges 15

The Melges 15 is a two-person boat.

The Melges 15 features an ergonomic platform and a broader weight range for competitive sailing. Melges conducted extensive research and product testing to develop this layout, considering the cockpit depth, spine height, and floor arrangement. The result is a comfortable environment for both skipper and crew. The deeper cockpit reduces strain on sailors’ knees and helps them feel more secure in the boat. A key design goal was to create a boat that adults can sail comfortably.

The primary design goals of the Melges 15 were stability and performance in various conditions. The boat’s narrow beam and flat cross-sectional shape ensure stability, righting moment, and easy planing. With just the right amount of bow and stern curvature, the Melges 15 is forgiving upwind and maneuverable in choppy conditions.

The asymmetrical spinnaker adds a performance boost, while the single-line launch and retrieval system makes handling the sail easy and fast. A single line extends the bowsprit, raises the halyard, and positions the sheet. To retrieve the spinnaker, simply release the launch line and pull the retrieval line to store it back into the forward cockpit bag.

Every detail of the deck hardware is designed for simplicity and ease of use. Blocks and cleats are positioned within easy reach, making it easier for skipper and crew to maneuver the boat.

The Gnav vang system provides the crew with significantly more space to move around in the cockpit.

The Melges 15 mast features a tapered tip to maximize depowering in strong winds. A stiffer mast base combined with a softer tip allows the M15 to perform competitively in varying wind conditions and with different crew weights.

The aluminum foils maximize performance and durability. Their consistent shape ensures fair class competition while remaining extremely robust.

The kick-up rudder system is effortless. No need to get wet or pull on ropes—just lift the tiller and pull it forward to bring the rudder into its upright position.

Switching from a non-spinnaker to a spinnaker configuration is quick and simple. Attach the bowsprit, deploy the spinnaker, and you’re ready to go. This feature is great for clubs that teach during the day and race in the evenings.

Comfort and safety were key considerations in this design. The closed transom eliminates the need for a false floor, allowing for a deeper and more comfortable cockpit. Any water that enters the boat drains easily through the transom scuppers and cockpit bailers.
